Gambling

The link between substance use, mental health, and homelessness is well-known, but non-substance-based addictions or behaviors, such as problem gambing, are less understood. Gambling is often tied to substance use and other risky behaviors, and studies have demonstrated higher levels of disordered gambling among people experiencing homelessness than housed people, but the relationship is a complex one. Some surveys report individuals as starting to gamble only after losing their housing, in part because arcades "offered a warm, safe, dry environment" that doubled as an opportunity for huge potential rewards.1
