How can German housing cooperatives contribute to reducing climate change?

Germany is well known for its long and significant history of housing cooperatives. These organizations continue to play a crucial role in the housing sector. Although there are more than 2.000 housing cooperatives with over two million apartments and over three million members in Germany providing housing to communities and people, unfortunately, it is not precisely known how many of these cooperatives include the issue of energy saving in their statute and to what extent the people and communities are informed, asked to get involved or participate in decision-making processes regarding energy saving issues in housing.

The “Solidarische Stadt” project started by the TU-Berlin in cooperation with partners specializing in the field will try, among other issues, to identify and analyse the degree of awareness and the participation of these cooperatives in energy saving in housing. In this paper we will try to present some facts about the current situation in Germany and identify the problems and challenges that housing cooperatives face in the aim to reduce climate change.
